Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Wi-Fi Direct

What exactly is Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Wi-Fi Direct?

Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Wi-Fi Direct is an upcoming certification program from the Wi-Fi Alliance® that defines a new way for Wi-Fi devices to connect to each other directly.
Wi-Fi Direct is an emerging technology meant to meet the growing demand for easy, portable wireless network connectivity.
It's peer-to-peer wireless networking, which means that wireless devices such as notebooks,
Mobile phones, PC, printers etc. can "find" one another and establish wireless connectivity
without need of the presence of a wireless router, an access point, or wifi hotspots.

Wireless devices can now connect to each other directly
to transfer content and share applications quickly and easily.
Devices can make a one-to-one connection, or a group of several devices can connect simultaneously.

Connections based on the specification will work at typical Wi-Fi speeds and range, protected by WPA2. So the most significant difference between traditional ad-hoc wireless networking (traditional peer-to-peer networking) and Wi-Fi Direct is security, speed and range.
Typical Wi-Fi speeds, which can be as high as 250 Mbps, ranges up to 200 meters.
They can connect from just a few feet away, but also across a home.

Wi-Fi Direct devices near one another can transfer content at speeds 25 times faster than they could with Bluetooth 2.0.So this wifi technology should totally replace Bluetooth technology.

By the way, only Wi-Fi Alliance member companies will be able to use the Wi-Fi Direct mark to indicate that their products implement this specification.

Basic Wi-Fi Introduction

What is Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi is wireless connectivity, providing connectivity between Wi-Fi devices.
A Wi-Fi network can connect multiple devices to each other.

Wi-Fi can connects you to your favorite content and communications.
A Wi-Fi network can connect computers, media and display devices together
to share hardware and media resources such as printers, audio files and Internet access.
You can easy share files and access internet from your mobile phone or computer.
All of this without a lot of wires to flexibilty for your move.
For basic Wi-Fi if you want to connect wireless devices, you just need a single access point.
The devices do not communicate directly, but the go through the access point.

Frequency Band

How Wi-Fi operated ? Wi-Fi products operate over radio waves,
in the same way as your cell phone, TV, radio etc.

Wi-Fi products operate in the 2.4GHz or 5GHz bands.
These bands are designated as "license-free", which indicates that individuals may use without a government license.
Because the Wi-Fi bands are "license free", it becomes more important for products must pass the standards of interoperability set by the Wi-Fi certifications.
And because they also share these bands with non-Wi-Fi products, such as remote control toys.
Certification testing ensures that Wi-Fi products are good neighbors and will not interfere with signals from these devices.
